Verbele show, demonstrate, display, exhibit, reveal

Verbele to show (showed, shown), to demonstrate (ed), to display (ed), to exhibit (ed), to reveal (ed) în traducere înseamnă a arăta, a demonstra.

Verbul to show – „a arăta” – are sensul cel mai general dintre toate:
to show a new videocamera – a arăta o cameră video nouă,

Will you show me the shortest way to the station, please?
Îmi vei arăta drumul cel mai scurt până la stație?

Verbul to demonstrate – „a arăta”, „a demonstra” se folosește în următoarele contexte:

a) se referă la sentimente personale ale omului manifestate prin acțiuni:

The boy demonstrated his love for the puppy by taking good care of it.
Băiatul își demonstra dragostea față de cățeluș prin faptul că avea grijă de el.

b) a arăta, prin argumente sau prin exemple concrete, adevărul sau neadevărul unei afirmații, al unui fapt etc.:

The salesperson demonstrated to me how to use the video camera.
Vânzătorul mi-a demonstrat cum funcționează această cameră video.

c) a face parte în acțiuni publice:

The workers marched through the streets with flags and posters demonstrating their solidarity.
Muncitorii mărșăluiau pe stradă cu drapele și postere demonstrând solidaritatea lor.

Verbul to display – „a arăta”, „a da dovadă de”, „a manifesta”:
to display one’s intelligence – a-și manifesta inteligența
to display one’s generosity – a-și manifesta generozitatea

The soldiers displayed no fear under the enemy’s fire.
Soldații au dat dovadă de lipsă de frică în fața focului inamicului.

Verbul to exhibit – „a expune (la o expoziţie, etc.)” „a arăta” cu scopul atragerii atenției:

George wondered why I didn’t want to exhibit my paintings.
George s-a interesat de ce nu doresc să expun tablourile mele la expoziţie.

Vervul to reveal – „a destăinui”, „a divulga”:
The girl made me swear never to reveal her secret.
Fata m-a obligat să jur, că niciodată nu-i voi divulga secretul.

Verbele to wait (ed), to expect (ed), to anticipate (ed) se traduc a aștepta, dar au și nuanțe de sens.

Verbul to wait înseamnă a aștepta o perioadă anumită sau până la un moment dat. După acest verb deobicei se folosește prepoziția for:

We waited to see what would happen.
Am așteptat să vedem ce se va întâmpla.

We are going to have dinner soon. Everybody is waiting for you.
Vom lua masa curând. Toși așteaptă pe tine.

Verbul to expect înseamnă „a fi în așteptarea unui eveniment în viitor:

Heavy showers are expected later in the afternoon.
În a doua jumătate a zilei se așteaptă averse de ploaie.

Hillary was not yet home; she had been expected on Wednesday, but wired that it would be Friday.
Hillary încă nu era acasă, toți o așteptau Miercuri, însă ea a anunțat că va veni Vineri.

Comparați: We expect the taxi in five minutes, let’s go out and wait for it outside.

Verbul to anticipate înseamnă „a anticipa”:

We anticipated cold winter that’s why we had bought an extra supply of coal.
Noi am anticipat iarna rece, de aceia ne-am aprovizionat mai mult cu cărbune.

I didn’t anticipate that she would be so hostile.
Nu m-am așteptat că va fi atât de ostilă.
