Astăzi s-a născut George Washington (1732)

Posted by burdujan pe 22/02/2010

Washington is often called the „Father of his Country” because of the central role he played in the founding of the United States.
As commander of the Continental Army, he led colonial forces to victory over the British and served as the new nation’s first president.
He then relinquished that power and retired after two terms, thereby setting a key precedent for republican democracy.

How did Washington occupy himself after his retirement?
(highlight the answer)
After retiring from the presidency, Washington returned to Mount Vernon where he devoted much time to farming and, constructed a 200 m² distillery, which was one of the largest in the new republic. Two years later, the distillery produced 11,000 gallons of corn and rye whiskey worth $7,500, and fruit brandy.

Zero Conditional / Condiționalul Zero

Posted by burdujan pe 20/02/2010

If you try to talk to someone, and they completely ignore that you exist and don’t even turn and look at you or answer what you’re saying, that person is as cold as ice.

De exemplu, If you are an Olympic luger, you travel at breakneck speed.

Este mereu adevărat
– In the sport of luge, athletes shoot down a track at breakneck speeds at over 144 km per hour!

If an athlete wins a gold medal, he feels proud.

Posturi precedente cu Condiționalul Zero:
Woody Allen

to understand, to realize, to grasp

Posted by burdujan pe 17/02/2010

Verbele to understand (understood, understood), to realize (ed), to grasp (ed) au sensul de a înțelege, a percepe, dar se diferențiază având unele trăsături de sens.

1) Verbul to understand are utilizarea cea mai largă și are sensul de a înțelege, a avea o idee clară și exactă despre ceva:

It is better to understand little than to misunderstand a lot.

Propoziția He realized his mistake înseamnă că omul a conștientizat greșeala lui după ce i s-a atras atenția asupra ei.
Propoziția He didn’t understand his mistake înseamnă că omul nu a conștientizat greșeala lui chiar și după ce i s-a atras atenția asupra ei.

I soon realized that I was wasting my time.
În curând mi-am dat seama că pierd timpul meu degeaba.

Suddenly he realized that he was alone in the building.

I realize (understand) how you feel.
Eu înțeleg cum vă simțiți.

3) Verbul to grasp înseamnă a înțelege, a prinde ideia.
În diferență de verbul to understand, verbul to grasp înseamnă a nu avea percepția clară despre ce merge vorba.

to grasp an ideaa prinde ideia

I can’t quite grasp your meaning, I am sorry.

Astăzi s-a născut Charles Darwin (1809)

Posted by burdujan pe 12/02/2010

Darwin was an English naturalist who developed the modern theory of evolution.
Along with Welsh naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, he proposed the principle of natural selection: the mechanism by which advantageous variations are passed on to later generations and less advantageous traits slowly disappear.
Darwin’s intensely controversial theory of evolution aroused widespread argument and debate among scientists and religious leaders.

How did Darwin view religion and God?
(highlight the answer)
Though Darwin wrote of religion as a tribal survival strategy, he still believed that God was the ultimate lawgiver. He continued to help the local church with parish work, but on Sundays would go for a walk while his family attended church.
