Study Point: composting

Posted by burdujan pe 11/08/2009

1. Reading Pont –

Many of us want to do something to help protect the planet.
But it’s hard to know what actions we can take to actually make a difference.
Many people have started composting to help reduce the amount of waste they produce.

People who compost take their food waste, like banana peels, egg shells, and other meal scraps,
and save it in a special container instead of throwing it away.
Eventually, the compost turns into rich soil.
This soil can be used in the garden to help make things grow.

2. Grammar Point – verbele în -ing

Exemplu: I only started composting maybe six months ago or something.

3. Quiz Point – Which one uses a gerund?

a. I was sleeping when you called.
b. Sarah has amazing hair.

Posted by burdujan pe 27/07/2009

1. Grammar Point – Past Perfect Tense

I knew the Black Eyed Peas were no longer together because Fergie had done a solo career.

De exemplu, By the time she arrived at the party, her friends had left.

Study Point: Jet Lag

Posted by burdujan pe 19/07/2009

1. Reading Point –

Over the last 100 years, new technology has made it faster, easier, and far more common for people to travel internationally.
But one challenge that technology still hasn’t overcome is jet lag.

Most people experience jet lag when they travel long distances and cross into a different timezone.
Being jet lagged is like having the clock inside your body set to the wrong time.
Symptoms usually include fatigue, trouble sleeping, and feeling out of sync.

to be able to do something înseamnă a fi capabil, a fi în stare să faci ceva.

Study Point: Duplicity

Posted by burdujan pe 02/07/2009

1. Reading Point –

A good date movie is hard to find.
You want something that’s romantic but not too sappy, with enough action to keep everyone interested but not too much blood.
And it should be deep enough to give you something to talk about over dinner, but not so heavy that you leave the theater feeling depressed.

The new film Duplicity might be a good option.
Noul film Duplicitate ar putea fi o opţiune bună.
Part romantic comedy, part spy thriller, it’s a movie that has something for everyone.

2. Grammar Point – Present Perfect Tense

Have you ever seen Julia Roberts in a movie?(Aţi văzut-o vreodată pe Julia Roberts jucând într-un film?)

Prezentul Perfect se formează cu have/has + past participle
De exemplu, I have been married for five years. (Eu sunt căsătorit de cinci ani.)

Prezentul Perfect se foloseşte cu cuvintele for, since, ever, already, so far.
Ann hasn’t seen Julia Roberts in a film.

So how is it possible that they’ve never toured the largest venues in the world before?

This summer, Depeche Mode will make up for lost time by playing stadium shows in 28 cities throughout 21 different countries.

De exemplu, It’s surprising and fascinating that Depeche Mode has never toured stadiums before.

Ambele desciu aceiaşi emoţie.

Study Point: Earth

Posted by burdujan pe 03/06/2009

1. Citiţi textul:

Sometimes it’s easy to forget about how many different species of animals and plants there are on this planet, and what a rich and beautiful world we inhabit.

Especially when we live in a city, far away from the forests and mountains and meadows, we might start to think that concrete is a natural environment, and that pigeons are the only species of birds out there.

3. Răspundeţi la întrebare.
