Posted by burdujan pe 30/06/2009

1. Quote –

I was blown away by her preparation. She was always on time, great off-camera, totally cool.

– Actor Kevin Connolly talking about his costar, Scarlett Johansson. (Us Weekly)

Kevin Connelly

Kevin Connelly

2. Definition –

very impressed; amazed
impresionat; uimit, uluit

3. Use –

The expression blown away can actually mean three different things.
Expresia blown away poate însemna trei lucruri diferite.

It can mean killed with a gun or bomb, defeated, or impressed.
Poate avea sensul de ucis cu un pistol sau cu bombă, învins, sau impresionat.

Connolly is using blown away to say that he was amazed or impressed.
Connolly foloseşte blown away să spună că a fost uimit şi impresionat.
This is the most common use of the expression in day to day life.
Aceasta este cea mai comună utilizare a expresiei în viaţa de zi cu zi.
The other uses come up more often in action movies where people get killed or when you’re talking about competitions.
În alte utilizări veni mai des în filme de acţiune în cazul în care oamenii omorat sau, atunci când aţi vorbit despre concursuri.
To understand Connolly’s meaning, imagine if something were so impressive that it picked you up off your feet and carried you away,
like a powerful gust of wind.

Pentru a înţelege sensul folosit de Connolly, imaginaţi-vă ceva a fost atât de impresionant încât aţi fost ridicat deasupra pământului, cu o rafală puternică de vânt.
That’s where the expression blown away comes from.
Iată de unde provine expresia blown away.

As it does in the quote from Connolly, blown away works like an adjective in a sentence.
În citatul lui Connolly, blown away are funcţia de un adjectiv într-o propoziţie.
It describes the way someone feels when they encounter something incredible.
El descrie modul în care cineva se simte atunci când întâlneşte ceva incredibil.
But if you change the form of the expression a little, it can also be used as a verb.
Dar dacă schimbi forma expresiei un pic, poate fi, de asemenea, utilizat cu funcţia de un verb.
You can be blown away by something amazing, or something amazing can blow you away.
Puteţi fi blown away de ceva uimitor, sau ceva uimitor te poate blow away.

Kevin Connolly isn’t the only person blown away by Scarlett Johansson.
Kevin Connolly nu este singura persoană impresionată de Scarlett Johansson.
She’s been named the Sexiest Woman Alive not just once, but twice.
Ea a fost numită the Sexiest Woman Alive nu doar o dată, dar de două ori.
But if you’re already a Scarlett fan, that news probably won’t blow you away, since you likely already knew it.
Dar, dacă esti deja un fan al lui Scarlett, această ştire nu te va uimi deoarece, probabil, deja o cunoşti.
