Cuvântul Zilei: polemic

Сând cuvântul polemic a fost împrumutat din limba franceză (polemique) în sec. 17-lea, se referea la un atac ostil la ideile cuiva.
Originile mai adânci ne aduc la grecescul polemikos, care însemna războinic sau ostil și la cuvântul polemos, însemnând război.
Alte cuvinte care s-au format de la polemos sunt: polemarch (un conducător militar din grecia antică), polemoscope (un tip de binoclu cu oglindă oblică), și polemology (știință despre război).

Recenta carte a romancierului este piperată cu numeroase cuvinte argotice şi neologisme, pe care unii cititori ar putea să nu le cunoască.

WOOL vs. WOOLEN

În engleză există adjectivul woolen (amer.)/ woollen (brit.) care înseamnă de lână, din lână, și avem substantivul wool care înseamnă lână.

În engleză este obișnuit de folosit substantive cu funcție de adjective.
Exemple:
• I’m out of paper towels.
• I love the smell of a tree farm.
• Do you have any cotton balls?

Dacă există un adjectiv (în cazul nostru woollen) care înseamnă același lucru ca și un substantiv (în cazul nostru wool) nu este numaidecât de folosit adjectiv.

Or, putem spune atât,
I washed my wool sweater in the washer-machine, and now it smells like mildew.
cât și,
I washed my woollen sweater in the washer-machine, and now it smells like mildew.

Cuvântul Zilei: fatuous

: fără rost, fără sens, inutil (d. o incercare, etc.), idiot, infatuat, înfumurat, plin de sine, prostesc

Exemplu în context:
“Fatuous and condescending” is how one reviewer described two of the best-selling books.
“Fără sens şi binevoitoare” este modul în care un referent a descris două dintre cele mai bine vândute cărţi.

Cuvintele fatuous și infatuation derivă de la același cuvânt latin, fatuus, însemnând absurd, fără rost.
În engleză a apărut în sec. 17.

Cuvântul Zilei: pink

Cuvântul Zilei: intestate

Exemplu în context:
Mark and Joan worried about what would happen to their child if they died intestate, so they hired a lawyer to draw up a will soon after the baby was born.
Mark şi Joan făceau grijă pentru ce s-ar întâmpla cu copilul lor, dacă ei ar muri fără să lase un testament, aşa că au angajat un avocat care acesta să elaboreze testamentul imediat după nașterea copilului.

Intestate a fost împrumutat de engleză în sec. 14 din latinescul intestatus, care însăși s-a format din prefixul in- (nu) și adjectuvul testatus,” meaning “having left a valid will.”
Testatus, în schimb, provine de la participiul trecut al verbului testari, însemnând a lăsa un testament.
