opportunity, possibility, chance

Substantivele possibility, opportunity, chance exprimă posibilitatea, dar, totuşi, au unele diferenţe de sens.

1. Substantivul possibility este neutru în comparaţie cu alte sinonime.
El poate însemna atât posibilitatea agreabilă cât şi dezagreabilă.
Acest substantiv se foloseşte cu un alt substantiv precedat de prepoziţia of sau gerunziu:

There is a possibility of rain, so take your umbrella.
(Este posibil să plouă, ia umbrela.)
Is there any possibility of getting airline tickets for tomorrow?
(Este posibil de găsit bilete de avion pentru mâne?)

2. Substantivul opportunity subliniază posibilitatea agreabilă şi se foloseşte cu gerunziu sau infinitiv:

My friend has the opportunity of going to England for two weeks.
(Prietenul meu are oportunitatea de a merge în Anglia pentru două săptămâni)
The professor gave the students an opportunity to ask questions.
(Profesorul a oferit studenţilor posibilitatea de a răspunde la întrebări)

Substantivul opportunity se foloseşte cu următoarele verbe:
to have (a avea), to find (a găsi), to get (a obţine), to give (a da), to take (a lua), to seize (a pune mâna pe),
to grasp (a înşfăca), to miss (a pierde), to waste (a irosi), to provide (a aproviziona), to offer (a oferi):

Why have you missed the opportunity of going overseas as a volunteer?
(De ce ai pierdut oportunitatea de a pleca peste hotare în calitate de voluntar?)

Adjectivele care se folosesc cu substantivul opportunity sunt:
good, excellent, wonderful (minunat), golden, rare, welcome (multaşteptat), unique

David had a rare opportunity of visiting a few African countries.
(David a avut o oportunitate rară de a vizita câteva ţări africane.)
Anna was given an excellent opportunity of studying at Harvard.
(Lui Ana i s-a dat o oportunitate excelentă de a studia la Hravard.)

3. Substantivele chance şi opportunity sunt interschimbabile.
Dar chance se foloseşte în conversaţii neformale:

If I had an opportunity / chance of going to Spain for my holiday, I would certainly take it.
(Dacă aş avea posibilitate de a pleca în Spania, aş accepta-o numidecât.)

Substantivul chance deasemenea înseamnă un prilej fericit, o şansă.
În acest context el nu poate fi înlocuit cu opportunity.
După chance poate fi folosit gerunziu şi infinitiv:

Susan always jumps at the chance of showing off.
(Susan niciodată nu scapă oportunitatea de a se lăuda)
Peter had a chance to work as an interpreter at an international conference in summer.
(Petru a avut şansa să lucreze ca translator la o conferinţă internaţională vara)

Notă:
Substantivul possibility niciodată nu se foloseşte cu verbul to have (have the possibility).
