Acid precipitation, also known as acid rain, is any form of precipitation—snow, rain, sleet, or hail — that contains a heavy concentration of sulfuric and nitric acids. Automobiles, certain industrial operations, and electric power plants that burn fossil fuels emit pollutants that combine with atmospheric moisture to create these acids. Acid rain can contaminate drinking water, damage vegetation and aquatic life, and erode buildings and monuments.
Where was acid rain first found?

Acid rain was first found in Manchester, England. In 1852, Robert Angus Smith found the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution. Though acid rain was discovered in 1852, it wasn’t until the late 1960s that scientists began widely observing and studying the phenomenon. Canadian Harold Harvey was among the first to research a “dead” lake.
